Mr & Mrs Davis in Maine - Day 3, Part 10

This little guy was the self-appointed greeting committee to the island.

This fellow, on the other hand, had the less-enviable job of sentry duty.

Mr & Mrs Davis in Maine - Day 3, Part 7

Brad had the camera most of the time as we explored the island...thus the overwhelming number of pics of his lovely wife. :)

And one or two of his mom and his little brother. haha

Stay tuned for tomorrow's pics - finally some island scenery!

Mr & Mrs Davis in Maine - Day 3, Part 6

We finally arrived at Monhegan Island!

This was our first sight of it through the fog. So quaint!

This is an island next to it, called Manana Island. Note the railing up to the little house on the hill. :)

Mr & Mrs Davis in Maine - Day 3, Part 3

As if an hour-long boat ride isn't enough excitement in and of itself, we got to enjoy beautiful scenery along the way as well...including wildlife.

There were various types of seabirds around (as well as a floating pond of sea kelp, which I think is alive - that could be considered wildlife, no?), but scroll down to see our absolute best views of Maine wildlife!

Harbor seals!!

Oodles of them!

Aren't they adorable? :)

Mr & Mrs Davis in Maine - Day 3, Part 2

The boat ride to Monhegan Island took about an hour, and even through the fog we were able to catch a glimpse of a few of the islands along the Maine coastline.

Maine boasts an amazing 3500 miles of coastline (more than California!) because of the incredible topograhpy along the shore...see this map to get an idea. Monhegan Island is the southernmost island named on the map.

But even more amazing is the staggering number of islands offshore - 4613! What looks like coastline in these pictures is actually islands, each one separate. Most are uninhabited, but the larger ones have summer cottages and some even a few year-round residents.

Lobster buoys dot the water for several miles out.

Mr & Mrs Davis in Maine - Day 3, Part 1

I'm not sure why it's taken me more than a month to get pictures posted of our last day together, but I suspect it has something to do with not wanting the visit with Brad and Jennifer to be over.

However, I have a lot of pictures of our last-day adventures to share, and it's time to get on with it.

We got up early that morning and drove down to Port Clyde to catch a mailboat heading to Monhegan Island ten miles offshore. It was quite foggy, which was a little disappointing at first, but it gave the day a bit of an ethereal feeling which was oddly pleasant.

The boats are a mixture of sailing and lobstering vessels. The lighthouse is Marshall Point in Port Clyde.

Jennifer took these pictures (which is why they are so good) while we were still in the harbor.

Enjoy!

PSA

It appears I may have gotten in a little over my head with this here blog thing.

I love my original blog template, except for the pale background, which I couldn't change as it was a standard part of the template. I've been wanting a black background for a while now, as it makes photographs really pop, so I took the plunge and chose a new template.

I like it, except now my text is all over the place. Please overlook the mess as I slowly clean it up. :)
