September 26, 2014

Our first sign of fall in these parts!
This is the only sign - just these few leaves - but it's a promise of cooler weather to come.

Jed's presentation at our homeschool group this morning was based on how to build a better mousetrap.
Here he is demonstrating the alarm he rigged up.

Here he is baiting the trap with cheese.

Here he is showing the kids a photograph we took in 2012 when he first built the mousetrap.

And here he is showing the kids proof that it worked.
Before you get grossed out, remember we were living in Maine where the winters are really cold and little critters find their way indoors sometimes to survive the winters.
Happens to the best of us.  :)

Our car turned 200,000 miles old today!

September 19, 2014 - Part 3

Tracy's sister and her family joined us later that evening for dinner and a ghost walk downtown.
We hung out on the dock waiting for it to get dark.  :)

Today was International Talk Like a Pirate Day and if you went to Krispy Kreme dressed as a pirate (with at least 3 accoutrements) and asked for donuts in pirate lingo, you got a free dozen!!  Jed was all over that.  :D

September 19, 2014 - Part 2

Bill took a few pictures while they were out and kindly sent them to me.

Jed returned the favor by entertaining Bill with his tricks.  :)

September 19, 2014 - Part 1

Our friend Bill came over this afternoon for a quick kayaking trip with Jed down the creek.

It's not so quick, though, to get the kayaks in the water.  :)

September 11, 2014

We spent today in somber reflection.  Interestingly, I noticed an unusually still reflection in the marsh this morning - not a leaf was stirring, and we could see a perfect reflection of the underside of the dock in the high tide water.

This heron was spending a moment in quiet reflection also, apparently.

Jed started a new homeschool group today - Classical Conversations.  I've been a bit concerned about the weekly 3 hour class and the time spent reviewing each day, but so far it's been great.  His tutor has a penchant for dressing up like a mad scientist during the science experiments.  :)

The students are expected to do a presentation each week and to have practiced it enough to be competent in their information and its delivery. This first week's presentation was a self-introduction, and Jed did remarkably well. I would have chalked that up to a certain level of comfort with the material, but the next week he researched and presented on the Indus River Valley Civilization and did just as well...perhaps we have a budding orator in the house. He certainly gets enough practice with that. :)

August 28, 2014 - Part 2

This was Jenn's first time driving a car onto a ferry, and Dyce and Decker's first ferry ride -
so glad to get to enjoy this with them!

The End.
I didn't take a picture of me crying when they left.

August 28, 2014 - Part 1

We spent our last day together back at Fort Fisher, this time to explore the coast and ride the ferry over to Southport.

Brad saw little hermit crabs in the water and went to get one for Dyce.
Unfortunately he didn't count on not being able to get back up on the walkway.  :)

 Success!

 Even Decker was impressed.
Or just curious.
It's hard to tell with a 10 month old.  :)

This is the ferry we were going to be taking in a few minutes.

Time to hustle everyone back in the car for the ride to the ferry terminal.

August 27, 2014

Brad, Jenn, Dyce, Decker, & Jed hit the beach today.
They came back a lot earlier than I expected...
apparently taking kids to the beach does not make for the relaxing day they were anticipating.  :)

August 26, 2014

Today had a good mix of individual fun -
massage, golf game, running errands sans child (that would be me!)
- and relaxation.

August 25, 2014 - Part 4

Brad and Jenn relaxing in the grown-up playground after a long day of fun.

August 25, 2014 - Part 3

The playground was the biggest hit of the day.

 Decker taking a lady-like spill.  :)
