July 25, 2014

Is this the weirdest tree you've ever seen?  It's like something out of Dr Suess!

Close up of the Dr Suess tree.

We went to Carolina Beach Friday night...another unsuccessful letterboxing jaunt but a fun night otherwise.

We walked down to the beach and sat down on a bench along the boardwalk while we ate fresh donuts from Britt's.  It was late dusk, so I knew the focus wouldn't be great on this picture, but I love it anyway.  However, I don't know what the bands of color are from.
Jed had a ball playing in the surf while we sat in the sand.
This was taken before he starting rolling around in the waves.  :)

This little guy was enjoying a snooze on my hammock.
Between him, Jed and Tracy, it's hard to find it unoccupied. :)

July 12, 2014

We took some friends from church letterboxing with us this evening.  Our first stop was a downtown bookstore, which was a success.  The next two boxes we looked for weren't as successful, but it's just as well since my camera battery died right after taking this picture.  :)

The owners of the letterbox we found the other day live out of state, so they are not able to maintain the box and it had become water-damaged.  We went back and got it with their permission and brought it home to replace the box and logbook.

I really like how the logbook turned out.  :)

Jed enjoyed putting it back and getting a chance to see the Venus Flytraps again.

July 5, 2014

We went in search of a letterbox today at the coolest place - a carnivorous garden!  Would you believe, the Venus Flytrap, that most well-known of the carnivorous plants, only grows natively in one location in the world - within a 60 miles radius of Wilmington, NC!  How cool is that?  :)

Speak of the devil...here she is, in all her glory.

They had several varieties of pitcher plants as well, which are also carnivorous...this is the yellow pitcher plant.

I don't know what this little orange flower is, but I like it.  :)

This was interesting information about a kind of bog we had never heard of...a pocosin.  They're only found along the southeastern coast, from southern Virginia to northern Florida, and they provide the perfect nutrient-starved environment for carnivorous plants.

It may not be pretty, but it's home!  :)

This was the worst of Hurricane Arthur for us...just a little more water than usual in the marsh.

And a little more water than usual in the driveway too.  :)

Some dear friends from Missouri moved to Laguna Niguel, California a few years ago.  They sent Jed this shirt sometime in the last year or two, and I'm just now getting a picture of him in it to send to them, just in time for him to outgrow the shirt.  :)
