The boat ride to Monhegan Island took about an hour, and even through the fog we were able to catch a glimpse of a few of the islands along the Maine coastline.
Maine boasts an amazing 3500 miles of coastline (more than California!) because of the incredible topograhpy along the shore...see this map to get an idea. Monhegan Island is the southernmost island named on the map.
But even more amazing is the staggering number of islands offshore - 4613! What looks like coastline in these pictures is actually islands, each one separate. Most are uninhabited, but the larger ones have summer cottages and some even a few year-round residents.
Lobster buoys dot the water for several miles out.
